WP4: Target Complex

WP4 is responsible for the design, engineering and installation of the BDF Target Complex in TCC8 and the service building (B754) containing its ancillaries.

The target station will be embedded in the TCC8 cavern and hosts the target, mounted on a trolley to allow target exchange, embedded in a vacuum confinement vessel surrounded by shielding. The shielding will be mainly composed of cast iron and concrete. The overall target station is 12 meters long 8 meters wide and 4.8 m tall. For the exchange of the target or any active component a remotely controlled overhead travelling crane will be used. In addition, a sufficient space on the upstream part of the target station will be reserved for target exchange infrastructure.

The service building will host the target cooling plant, control station, service cell, power distribution and the associated ventilation system. The service cell will be used to prepare the highly activated objects for final disposal, to perform Post Irradiation Examination and possibly the repair of faulty equipment. As per the type of equipment processed in the building it will be classified as nuclear laboratory and will be equipped with the relevant changing rooms. The building will be equipped with an overhead travelling crane.

The WPL is charged with the coordination of the R&D effort as part of the Technical Design phase and to ensure, in collaboration with the HI-ECN3 project office, the delivery of the Technical Design Report and related Work Package descriptions to converge on an updated scope, with cost and resource estimates, and project schedule.
